The Shadow Gives Shape to the Light

A class for those who have firm grasp of photographing in manual mode but who wish to learn how to read and control light and shadow for stronger results, this 6-week course will teach you how to use and modify indoor and outdoor ambient light. Discover what overcast skies are wonderful for, how to use open shade to your best advantage, and how you can shoot even in broad daylight at high noon and come up with great images.

We will meet and start out at Seymour, the Pub, on Saturdays from 10am-12pm, starting on Sept. 8th, during non-open hours. The first half will introduce new techniques and share examples of artists using them in their work, the second hour will be for hands-on learning and troubleshooting.

You will learn:

  • How to find and use open shade
  • Shooting against the sun
  • Adding shadows to increase interest and texture
  • What diffusers, reflectors and black cards are for
  • How to make any lighting condition work for you

There will be an optional, private Facebook group to share work and receive feedback, or to just share your images and have your classmates cheer you on!

Materials:

  • Please bring your DSLR capable of automatic and manual mode.
Should you have any questions about your particular camera, please email me at anja@anjaschutz.com
  • A notebook
